Born in Toronto, Canada, where he currently lives. Sanguedolce ’s obsession with home movies led to an enduring interest in the theme of “family”, which his time at Sheridan College (1978–1981) gave him the tools to give expression to. Trained in the personal documentary ethos of the “Escarpment School” of Canadian filmmakers with which he is associated, Sanguedolce would begin a body of work that paid relentless attention to the innermost private moments of the self. After graduating, he co-directed the darkly poetic documentary Full Moon Darkness (1983). His next handful of films including Away (1996), SMACK (2000) and Dead Time (2005) would establish him as one of North America’s premier diary filmmakers.
