Born in 1977 in Kobe, Hyogo, where she
resides. She studied photography at the Seian
University of Art and Design. SAWADA
is known for her portraits exploring
relationships between the inner self and
outward appearances. With her debut series
ID400, she was awarded a Special Prize at the
Canon New Cosmos of Photography 2000,
the Kimura Ihei Award in 2004, and the
Twentieth Annual ICP Infinity Award for
Young Photographers from New York’s
International Center of Photography in the
same year. Her work is shown at exhibitions
throughout the world. She has also published
photography and picture books. SAWADA is
currently a guest professor at Seian University
of Art and Design.
