Born in 1975, New York, where she is currently based. She received her BA from Brown University, an MFA from the Milton Avery Graduate School for the Arts, and attended the Whitney Independent Study Program and the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten. In 2014, Oppenheim was the recipient of the AIMIA|AGO Photography Prize and the Shpilman International Prize for Excellence in Photography. Her work is in the permanent collections of MoMA, the Guggenheim Museum, the Getty Museum, the Israel Museum, and the MIT List Visual Arts Center.
