Merzbow took part in the noise and industrial music scenes of the early 1980s and began releasing recordings mainly on international labels. In the 2000s, identifying with punkstyle computer music from the Mego label, he adopted live performance methods using laptop. Concerned about animal rights, Merzbow has been a vegan since about 2003 and has produced works on themes including anti-whaling, anti-dolphin hunting, and antifur. In recent years Merzbow has been engaged in mainly analog sound creation.
