Researcher and educator specializing in Asian cinema, photography, and performance. Also a curator of independent film from Japan, China, and Southeast Asia. In 2004-2005, Hall cocurated “JPEX: Japanese Experimental Film & Video 1955-now”. JPEX was the largest overseas film series dedicated to Japanese experimental cinema, touring six North American cities as well as Frankfurt, Germany. Since 2012, Hall has worked as co-curator for the China Onscreen Biennial, bringing independent Chinese cinema to US audiences. Hall has taught Asian media studies at such schools as the University of Chicago, the University of California (Berkeley, Irvine, and San Diego campuses), and Pomona College. He also undertakes research focused on sexuality and psychoanalysis in postwar Japanese experimental film and on male eroticism in Japanese photography. Hall is currently editing a collection of photographs by Japanese photographer Yato Tamotsu.
