Istanbul-based Halil ALTINDERE examines
political, social, and cultural codes in an effort
to bring marginalization and the resistance to
repressive structures into sharper focus. As a
curator and the publisher of art-ist magazine,
he has carved out a position at the center of
the Turkish contemporary art scene. Following
up the early stages of his career, when he
concentrated on using everyday objects as
artistic media for subverting the popular
notions of the nation-state and authority,
ALTINDERE has been exploring subculture,
gender, and the odd-but-ordinary backdrops
of daily life since the turn of the century. His
works have been featured in exhibitions at
the Documenta and Manifesta, at biennales in
Istanbul, Gwangju, Sharjah, and São Paulo,
and at MoMA/PS1 in New York.
