Gioli is a painter and experimental filmmaker born in 1942 near Venice where he still lives. He visited New York in 1967-68 where he was influenced by the avant-garde films he saw. Following his return to Italy, Gioli began making his own films without much notice taken. Even now, though interest in his films has grown, discussion of his work remains cued to the artist’s own commentaries which are mainly about his practices. Since the beginning of this century though, things have changed for him. Several major institutions and international film festivals got increasingly interested to his work, to name one for all, the HFA.
