While studying at Nihon University College of Art, in the Department of Cinema, Shimada had the opportunity to watch fireworks from directly beneath them. So moved by the experience, she made the decision to enter the world of fireworks. Since then, she has presented installations, performances, and video works created employing fireworks. Shimada has also been involved in the production of fireworks shows in Japan and abroad, including the Hannover International Fireworks Competition in Germany. Her major exhibitions include the 7th Moscow International Biennale of Contemporary Art (2017) and the Kyoto Nippon Festival, at the Kitano -Temmangu Shrine, in 2018. She is currently enrolled in a doctoral course at the Tokyo University of the Arts.
