Born in Buon Ma Thuot, a small city in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Lives and works here and there in the vibrancy of memories and present moments. His narratives and images – between documentary and fiction, personal and impersonal – draw on the landscape of his homeland, childhood memories, and the historical context of Vietnam. In his work, he experiments with combining abstract concept-images with realistic improvisations during shooting. His films have been selected for international film festivals and exhibitions such as Clermont-Ferrand, Oberhausen, Rotterdam, Busan, and Les Rencontres Internationales Paris & Berlin. Alumnus of the Asian Film Academy (Busan International Film Festival) 2012, and Berlinale Talents (Berlin International Film Festival) 2016, and winner of the main art prize at the 20th VideoBrasil, Sao Paulo, in 2017. His second feature film The Tree House (2019) premiered at the 72nd Locarno Film Festival (Filmmaker of the Present Competition), where it was included in “Three of the festival’s best premieres” by Mubi, and described as “an ode to memory and filmmaking” by The Film Stage. It was subsequently shown at the 57th New York Film Festival, Viennale, Festival Des 3 Continents, Rotterdam International Film Festival, and CPH:Dox.
