Architect/Chairman of “Initiative for Tomorrow’s Opportunities in Architecture” (Ebisu)
ITO Toyo was born in 1941. He graduated from Tokyo University’s Department of Architecture in 1965. His major works include the Sendai Mediatheque, ‘Minna no Mori’ Gifu Media Cosmos, and the National Taichung Theater, Taiwan. He has won several prizes, such as the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 8th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale, The Royal Institute of British Architects’ Royal Gold Medal, and the Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate. He founded the “Initiative for Tomorrow’s Opportunities in Architecture” in 2011 to provide a new platform for architectural education, including an architectural school for children and town planning in rural islands.
