HATAKEYAMA Naoya was born in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, in 1958. He has been based in Tokyo since completing postgraduate studies at the University of Tsukuba in 1984. Publications include Contour Line (1983), Lime Works (1996), Citta in negativo, and others. In 1997, on the basis of his series Lime Works and exhibition “Maquettes”, he was presented with the 22nd Kimura Ihei Memorial Photography Award. In 2001, he was selected to represent Japan at the Venice Biennale, the world’s largest international art exhibition; in the same year, he received the 42nd Mainichi Award of Art for the photo book Underground. In 2012, his solo exhibition “Natural Stories” (Tokyo Photographic Art Museum) won him the Japanese Minister for Education Award for Fine Arts. Recent publications include Kesengawa (2012), and Rikuzentakata 2011-2014 (2015).
