Midi Z is a filmmaker who lives in Taiwan and films his home country of Myanmar. 14 Apples is a quiet piece that records an experience of his long-time friend Wang Shin-hong, a Myanmar resident and co-creator of Midi Z’s works since the beginning. In the film, Shinhong follows the advice of a fortune-teller to treat his insomnia―living for two weeks at a monastery as a monk and eating an apple each day. The people of Myanmar have high respect for monks as a source of knowledge and guidance, and the environment presented in the film provides a glimpse of the country’s social structures and poverty. Through this film, we experience the time and distance that has accumulated between Midi Z and Wang Shin-hong.
