MORIMURA Yasumasa is known for the many works in which he transforms himself into various portraits, from the subjects of famous artworks to pop stars and actresses. Andy Warhol, who shook up the “myth of originality” in the art world, is an important point of reference. Morimura undertook his “Economic Self-Portrait” series after realizing that many of the people he had portrayed in his works are figures depicted on paper money. Banknotes, which are copied in huge quantities but individually numbered, may be the ultimate “multiple.”
