This collection of films comprehensively documents Rivers’ efforts to illustrate non-linear time or dimensionality through visual media. Shot in the filmmaker’s own home, Things examines the degree to which people’s environment influences their senses and perceptions over the course of the four seasons. Featuring images of artwork such as ancient clay figures and earthenware, The Shape of Things adopts a tone that wavers in its attempts to make sense of heaven and earth, or of the world itself. Ghost Strata alludes to things that have gone away or cannot be seen, such as certain elements missing from rock strata, for example. Presented in diary format using footage shot around the world over the course of a year, the film hints at where the filmmaker himself may be headed, based on the footprints he leaves behind.
