Endo Maiko, a trained violinist who has previously been engaged in musical events in New York, offers her feature-length director’s debut with this Japan-US collaboration set in Okinawa. Even more than 40 years after their reversion to Japan in 1972, around 70% of US military installations in Japan remain concentrated in Okinawa, a territory rife with political tensions due to issues such as helipads in Takae and the new base proposed at Henoko. This film offers a portrait of a boy living in a town in Okinawa frequented by American soldiers, along with the island scenery around him, projected on 35 mm film to present a fantastical vision employing both black-and-white and color.
