Driven by the desire to film the light and darkness in underwater caves, Oda traveled around the Maya cenotes in the northern part of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. The results of that journey she made into the movie Cenote that was unveiled in 2019. This exhibition combines the triple screen video installation Day of the Dead, the 8 mm film travelogue Rush Film, and the “muse” series of images of sacrificed girls. All of these works are based on films that Oda shot using an 8 mm camera and an iPhone, under water and on land at the cenotes that are believed to be connections between this world and the afterworld. They portray the landscape of the Yucatan Peninsula, the people of Mexico, and the old tradition of the “day of the dead” they celebrate, in images that echo the native people’s distant memories, and that capture places where light and darkness, the living and the dead come together.
