KUBOTA Takayuki
Born in a port city when Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers were still alive. Received his M.F.A. from Hunter College, The City University of New York. Working across various media, from painting to video, installation, and writing, Kubota produces works incorporating histories (that he knows and doesn’t know yet) and memories (what he already has and doesn’t) that embrace the accidental learning process. Kubota is currently working on four interrelated assignments under the working title, hohoemigaeshi, the title borrowed from a last-released song by the Japanese idol trio, Candies. Each assignment is infused with the histories and memories of different places and periods through diverse figures from the last century to which he has been trying to say goodbye. The resulting ‘work’ appears as an installation work in an exhibition venue while it also realizes as a (performative) lecture and a written work. The artist’s book consists of his writings, and the encyclopedic collection of cited texts will be published in 2024-25. Kubota is a recipient of the Lucas Artist Fellowship at Montalvo Art Center, Saratoga, and has exhibited at 205 Hudson Gallery, New York, The Laundromat Gallery, Brooklyn, Thierry Goldberg Project, New York, and limArt, Tokyo. Kubota currently lives and works in Tokyo.
