After dropping out of the Department of Physics at Ochanomizu University, Tokyo,
Sugiura Kunié relocated to the US, where she has been living and working in New York since the 1960s. In her creative work, she has been experimenting with various methods of combining the medium of photography with different forms of expression, including painting and others. These photograms of plants and organisms, made without a camera, by exposing photographic paper with objects placed on it in a darkroom, reflect the time of the artist’s experimentation and dialogue about photography and life that we cannot control.
