Aenne Biermann is an artist who initiated a new current mainly in German photography in the mid 1920s. Captured through the mechanical eye of the camera, her portraits were charged with a kind of soberness that made them appear like still life photographs. These extreme close-up portraits seem to be stripped of such aspects as meaning or personal relationship between the photographer and her models – often family members or even Biermann herself. What is projected instead, is the potential beauty of the images’ constituent elements, such as the intensity of light, the angles of the models’ faces, and their gaze.
