Characterized by intense visuals, the works of Lu Yang address issues that combine aspects of religion, life philosophy, brain and neuroscience. Here the artist presents the latest in the “DOKU” series that has been ongoing since 2020. The protagonist, DOKU, represents a human (the artist) that was “digitally reincarnated” by way of cutting-edge modeling technology. The character’s name was inspired by an idea expressed in a Buddhist scripture, which can be translated into “live alone, die alone, go alone, come alone,” and thus implies that all life, be it in the real or in the virtual world, or in any other dimension, is solitary. The work represents Lu’s own take on the fundamental question of life and death, challenged through “reincarnation” by way of digital technology.
