The protagonist, DOKU, represents a human (the artist) that was “digitally reincarnated” by way of cutting-edge modeling technology. The character’s name was inspired by an idea expressed in a Buddhist scripture, which can be translated into “live alone, die alone, go alone, come alone,” and thus implies that all life, be it in the real or in the virtual world, or in any other dimension, is solitary. The work represents Lu’s own take on the fundamental question of life and death, challenged through “reincarnation” by way of digital technology.
