PAK Sheung Chuen

Breathing in a House, 2006 / Installation with video / 6 min. 22 sec.

Pak Sheung Chuen, who emigrated from mainland China to Hong Kong during childhood, expresses and documents complex issues within the realm of politics, history, religion, and globalization through humorous and poetic ideas that intersect with reality and imagination. Breathing in a House (2006), shown here, is said to originate from the thought, “How long does it take to breathe in all the air of this room?,” which Pak asked himself one night while sleeping on his bed and staring at the ceiling. For the 2006 Busan Biennale, he rented a room 6.7 meters by 2.7 meters by 2.2 meters in size—about as small as an apartment in Hong Kong—and lived there in the same way as usual, collecting his exhaled breath into transparent plastic bags in a continuous performance lasting 10 days until the bags filled the entire apartment. Created through such personal observation, gesture, and conceptual engagement with everyday life, the work triggers encounters that lead the viewer to self-reflection, while encouraging free interpretation and suggesting various possibilities in daily life.
