Listen to the City

“Humans are creatures that speak, but that does not mean that they own language. The point of our work is to reveal the history of those who live in cities but who do not have a voice, and the marginalized who speak but who do not have total possession of language.” Listen to the City, a collective that has been active since 2009, began its creative activities by asking questions regarding environmental and social irresponsibility and the destruction of cultural diversity—problems linked to the excessive development of Korea. Always seeking the most appropriate format for a given project without prioritizing artistic form, they are engaged in a variety of activities through which they pose a set of creative questions and search for answers about what to do within the social context. Referring to the process by which those at the urban periphery take ownership of their own language as a work of art (oeuvre), they continue all projects in a comprehensive manner together with experts from various fields. The exhibition introduces their multifaceted activities, including the Naeseong River Project rooted in environmental research against the construction of a dam, and interview videos that question cities as places built from the viewpoint of non-disabled people by considering streets for people with disabilities.
