Evelyn Taocheng Wang, a native of China based in the Netherlands, has been presenting a multi-disciplinary body of work based on a wide range of expressive methods including painting, performance, installation, and calligraphy, and on themes such as traditional Chinese painting techniques and cultural identity. For Wang, who also uses performance to describe her own Chinese painting, performance is a process of continuously creating something through encounters with different materials and experiences. Eschewing definitions or assertions, Wang constructs her performances in a way that diverges from a single storyline using metaphors, trivial gestures, fragments, and various texts gathered from gossip and readings. At the Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions, she will present a three-part performance titled Layers of Vocalization (2024).
