Born in Saitama, Kokatsu Reiko is a historian of modern and contemporary art, an art critic, and a scholar of gender theory. She was formerly Chief Curator at the Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts and has curated exhibitions including “Japanese Women Artists Before and After World War II, 1930s–1950s” (2001), “Japanese Women Artists in Avant-garde Movements, 1950–1975” (2005), and “Women In-Between: Asian Women Artists 1984–2012” (Fukuoka Asian Art Museum and others, 2012–13). In October 2023, she curated the “Women’s Lives: Disease, Aging, Death and Rebirth” exhibition, a civic project at Art Saitama 2023. She operates the “Asian Women Artists: Gender/History/Border” website.
