100 Year is the first experimental documentary by Makino Takashi, a director known for his abstract form of expression. On the occasion of the closure and demolition of Japan’s oldest film processing laboratory, which had been in business for 100 years, Makino documented the derelict building and the people who worked there until the very end. He digitized and abstracted countless films found in the building that depicted Yokohama after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and fused them with current footage to convey the history of a century of film culture through the light of a projector. In addition to a screening of the complete version of 100 Year, created in collaboration with musician Watanabe Takuma, the program includes a screening of a digital remastered version of The Intimate Stars, Makino’s best-known work, from the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum Collection.
