Photography-based artworks occupy an important position in the wide-ranging oeuvre of American artist Andy Warhol (1928–1987), who also worked across genres including painting, illustration, and filmmaking. After coming across compact cameras in the 1970s, Warhol began shooting on black and white 35mm film on a daily basis. He carried his camera with him at all times, capturing subjects including fragments of everyday life, people, cityscapes, celebrity parties, interiors, and street signs. The interest in continuous and repetitive images seen throughout Warhol’s work is reflected in his series of “stitched photos,” in which identical images are arranged in a grid and sewn together with a sewing machine. Certain trends and patterns reveal themselves in both individual photographs and those that have been pieced together, demonstrating how central a position photography occupied in Warhol’s thinking, perspective, and creative activities.
