Shot on 8 mm film, Social Circles features images of nature—scenery seen through the window of a car, rocks in the sea, cliffs—largely devoid of any human presence, subtitled with the monologue of the narrator. The narration is composed of the artist’s subjective words, but can also feel like the voice of the audience, or of the images themselves. Thanks to social media, we can now maintain social connections with friends and family all over the world. At the same time, we are finding it more and more difficult to engage in dialogue with others. Through her poetic approach to moving images in this work, Saito provides us with the opportunity to think about communication and relationships as they relate to the elusive concepts of others and oneself. See you again zeroes in on messages left on an answering machine, exploring the images we project onto others by inviting the viewer to imagine what kind of person the absent recipient is.
