Liu Yu carries out field studies based on documentary research to create works that integrate history, imagery, and narrative. In If Narratives Become the Great Flood, Liu takes as her theme the myth of the “Great Flood,” passed down orally across generations and cultures, and connects elements such as fragments of history and proverbs with contemporary society, reshaping shared memories in image form. Where did the story of the flood originate, and what event inspired it? No one knows the truth, but as the centuries have passed, differences and variations in the story, as well as the collective experience and words of different peoples, have been preserved as memories. The narrative itself has become like a flood, surging out in all directions and giving birth to new imagery.
